Greater Death’s Head Hawkmoth

Flying insect with reverse-colored wings, striped abdomen and skull-like symbol on its back.

Folding tips

  • Step 21 / 22: Look at this image for the result of this fold. It is easier to first fold the outer flaps, and flatten the center flap, then fold the top of the center flap. If you end up with this result, follow the fold lines as shown (red for mountain, blue for valley) to get the correct result.
  • Step 24: see this image for the result of the collapse.
  • Step 26: the top line is an existing fold.
  • At step 36, if you can’t open the model as shown in step 37, make sure you did the sinks at step 21 and 22 correct (see above).
  • Step 38: the middle of the top flap is just valley folded down, behind the bottom left flap. Take note that the vertical valley fold is one unit off-center; the diagonals are actually the vertical line one unit more to the left; see this image. Also note that this is not a fully flat fold and the top left flap (see step 39) stays a little three dimentional. The easiest way to make this fold is to first fold the two tips down two units (and a bit); see the difference between step 37 and 39 (and ignore the small flap now coming from the center). Squash it a bit and pull the horizontal center flap down. This should show you the general idea.
  • During step 40, first fold the top color change partially, then the bottom color change (this is an existing crease), then collapse in step 41. The diagram shows the model somewhat three-dimentional, this is not a flat fold.
  • At step 46 – 48 you can invert the edge by wrapping it around the back. It is easier to open up the model a bit. See this video.
  • Step 53: make sure to keep some paper available in the overlapping white wing parts (see bottom left and bottom right at step 54). This extra paper is required at step 88.
  • Step 63: note this is an inside crimp, i.e. sink-like fold.
  • Step 66 – 67: if you can’t perform this because there is a flap inside the folded layer, make sure you made an inside crimp fold at step 63 instead of a single-sided crimp. This step squashes the paper a bit, note the ‘dent’ in the top layer in the result (step 67).
  • Step 69: note that the right flap is inverted (i.e. the colored side now points to the inside of the model. It is easiest performed by opening up the flap a bit first.
  • At step 70, the triangle is squashed (see step 71 for the result). It almost automatically follows when mountain folding the flap down.
  • At step 73, unfold the inverted-color flap at the lower part that was made at step 69 (see the result at step 74).
  • Step 75: tuck the layer underneath the pocket behind it.

Paper & size

When folded from a 48cm square, the model ends up 34cm wide and 16cm long.
